The Oliver Food Bank believes that everyone has the right to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences. As part of this commitment, the Oliver Food Bank agrees to abide by the following set of ethics and conduct:
1. Provide food to those needing help regardless of race, national or ethnic origin, citizenship, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, income source, age or mental or physical ability.
2. Strive to provide the most nutritionally balanced food hampers possible respecting dietary restrictions, cultural traditions, and religious beliefs depending on availability of our supplies.
3. Implement best practices in the proper and safe storage and handling of food and follow guidelines as set out by Food Banks BC, Food Banks Canada and the BC Centre for Disease Control.
4. Practice equity and access with fairness and transparency for all food bank recipients in the distribution of food.
5. Serve all those who access services with the utmost concern, dignity and respect.
6. Respect the privacy of all clients, volunteers, donors and partners, and maintain the confidentiality of personal information.
7. Strive to make the public aware of the existence of hunger, and of the factors that contribute to it.
8. Strive to provide information about other community services to those who come to us for help.
9. Represent accurately, honestly, and completely our respective mission and activities to the larger community and demonstrate highest standards of personal integrity, truthfulness, honesty, and fortitude in all our activities in order to inspire confidence and trust in our activities.
10. Attend to and resolve any arising conflict of interest or perceived conflict of interest by volunteers.
11. Not take donated food, except that which is specifically given to volunteers, or cannot be distributed to clients.
12. Not accept gifts for personal use and avoid any interest or activity that is in conflict with the conduct of our official duties.
13. Not engage in any conduct not appropriate in promoting a healthy environment including: discourtesy or rudeness to a fellow volunteer, client, donor or partner; possession of alcohol or drugs (other than prescription medication); verbal or physical harassment; failure to follow the
Oliver Food Bank’s policies and procedures.
14. Not speak or act on behalf of the Oliver Food Bank but will direct all enquiries to the President or designate to ensure that we speak with one voice and provide accurate information about the Food Bank.
15. Practice ethical use and application of resources including but not limited to food, equipment, donated materials and volunteer services.
16. Practice fiscal accountability and responsibility in all aspects of the operation of the Food Bank, including full compliance with CRA and charitable receipting practices.
17. Practice sound governance, management and monetary responsibility on the part of the Board of Directors of the Food Bank.
18. Adhere to these Codes of Ethics and Conduct. Failure to do so will lead to an appropriate action decided by the Board of Directors.
